In an interview with the Washington Post this week, Joshua Gordon, new head of the National Institute of Mental Health, said that off label use of psychiatric medications is “… a problem that’s borne out of the fact that our treatments just don’t work, or don’t work well, for a substantial fraction of our patients.” Gordon went on to say that psychs would like to treat the underlying condition, rather than just symptoms, but the difficulty is in knowing what the underlying condition is.
